How to Pay in China as a Foreign Visitor

Published · Last updated

China is nearly cashless. Most locals pay with a QR code on their phone, and many small vendors simply don’t keep change. The good news: since 2024, foreign visitors can link their Visa, Mastercard, or JCB cards directly to Alipay and WeChat Pay — no Chinese bank account required. This page explains what works, what doesn’t, and what to set up before you fly.

The 30-second answer

Payment methods at a glance

Method Where it works Foreign card? Setup difficulty
Alipay Almost everywhere ✅ Yes (Visa/MC/JCB) Easy
WeChat Pay Almost everywhere ✅ Yes (Visa/MC/JCB) Easy
Cash (CNY) Legal tender everywhere Just withdraw
Credit card Hotels, malls, chains ✅ Yes No setup
UnionPay Local card networks ❌ Needs Chinese bank Hard

Tip: Alipay and WeChat Pay are roughly equivalent for a visitor. Set up both — some vendors only show one QR code, and having a backup helps if one gets blocked.

Set up mobile payments before you fly

  1. Download Alipay and WeChat from your app store.
  2. Register with your phone number and passport.
  3. Add your international card under Wallet → Cards (Alipay) or Me → Pay → Wallet → Bank Cards (WeChat).
  4. Complete real-name verification with your passport photo.
  5. Confirm the card is active with a small test payment while still at home.

Transaction limits apply to card-linked payments, so large purchases (hotel deposits, train tickets) may still be easier with cash or a card.

When to carry cash

Cash is legal tender and merchants are required to accept it by law — even if some small vendors are reluctant. Withdraw from a bank ATM (Bank of China, ICBC, or China Construction Bank) using your international card. Keep small notes (¥10–¥100) for markets and taxis.
